News and updates for our packaging community.

A new testing protocol, ISTA 3L, has been approved through ISTA's ANSI accredited consensus standards development process.

ISTA 3L is a research-based, data-driven testing protocol that allows users to evaluate a packaged product’s capability to withstand the supply chain hazards experienced when transporting and handling packaged-products from receipt into any e-commerce retailer fulfillment operation through to the end consumer.

To learn more about why we developed this test and other FAQ's, download the ISTA 3L eBook.

For more on the hazards that could be encountered in this supply chain, see ISTA TouchPoints. This publication is a summary of detailed questions that were addressed by e-retailers coupled with an analysis of how the insight could be leveraged during the packaging design process in conjunction with laboratory testing.

New Best Practice Guideline Published! Developed by members of the ISTA Pharma Committee, the ISTA PCG-04 best practice guidance document was established to align industry best practices for the selection, development & comparison of ATPs for use in the thermal qualification testing of thermal packaging to transport temperature-sensitive medicinal products.

The 2023 ISTA European Packaging Symposium will be held 27-28 September in Amsterdam, Netherlands at the Amsterdam Marriott Hotel. This year’s program will provide insights on today's hot topics and will offer new solutions to help shape the future of transport packaging.

For the first time, we're offering an in-person training for ISTA's Packaging Dynamics Professional (ISTA PDP) Certification program! The training will be held prior to the event in Amsterdam.

We're thrilled to announce that a new track focused on Temperature Sensitive Life Science Product Distribution has been added to this year's symposium program. We're still accepting abstracts for this track. Topics of interest include:

Sustainability | Mechanical testing best practices: Bulk versus Parcel / Single Use versus Reusable / General Guidance | Real-time Monitoring | Frozen Shipping Solutions (Dry Ice, PCM, LN2) Shippers General Guidance | Design Qualification Guidance | Temperature Monitoring Strategies | Thermal Blankets/Covers Testing/Qualification Strategies | Ambient temperature lane data capture project | Shipper Orientation | Continuous Monitoring Strategies | Validation of Refrigerated trailers | Gene Therapy Strategy | Ocean Freight for Pharmaceutical Products | Total Cost of Ownership | Active Containers | Room Temperature Products | Direct to Patient Shipment Strategies

ISTA's Education Council has established a work group to revise ISTA’s Responsible Packaging by Design (ISTA RPbD) Process Standard. The RPbD Guide is a voluntary process standard for the design, testing and qualification of responsible packaging.

With work well underway, the work group is focusing on the expansion of the RPbD process & associated metrics - giving the RPbD Guide a much wider scope that goes well beyond the current focus on sustainable design & development of packaging for regulated products.

Led by ISTA RPbD Guide co-author and Instructor, Larry Dull and ISTA VP of Program & Market Development, Matt Thompson, work group members include:

  • Austin Given, Veritiv Corporation
  • Colby Grantz, LaCrosse Footwear Incorporated
  • Damon Lucenta, Pregis
  • James Stanley, Veritiv Corporation
  • Jim Ollmann, SC Johnson
  • Joe Fair, Lexmark
  • Kara Revoir, GreenPeak Packaging, LLC
  • Khondker Hossain, Sonos, Inc.
  • Luke Magnant, GreenPeak Packaging, LLC
