Bernard McGarvey Award

Bernard McGarvey passed away unexpectedly on November 15th, 2022. He received his Bachelor of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering and spent 34 years working for Eli Lilly and Company. Bernard excelled in process control, process engineering, corporate manufacturing, and First Principles thinking, which greatly improved engineering decision-making and problem-solving.

During his retirement, Bernard actively supported the ISTA community. His compassion, knowledge, kindness, and mentorship truly defined him as "one of a kind," leaving a lasting imprint on the Cold Chain Community. As a tribute to Bernard's successful career, professionalism, endless knowledge, energetic spirit, and compassionate mentorship, ISTA has created the Bernard McGarvey Award. This award will be given to an individual who exemplifies the leadership characteristics and professional aspirations to continuously improve our cold chain industry.

Make a Nomination

Award candidates are nominated by industry peers and reviewed by the Foundation Board Members for final selection. The selected recipient will be honored at ISTA's Annual Forum. Review the full nomination criteria prior to making a nomination. Nominations may be submitted for consideration at any time through the online form. The deadline for nominations to be considered in a given year is January 31st.

  • Impact on Industry: The nominee's educational efforts should have influenced the industry in its understanding of effective package design.  This education could be delivered in many ways:

    • Classroom teaching
    • Industry presentations
    • Field interactions and consultations
    • Contributions to the development of educational resources like industry best practices, industry guidance, standards, and more
  • Reach and Engagement: The nominee's educational initiatives should have reached a broad audience and actively engaged participants, fostering a deeper understanding of effective package design
  • Collaboration and Leadership: The nominee should exhibit strong leadership and collaboration skills, working effectively with industry peers, organizations, and stakeholders to advance the ISTA mission
  • The award includes:
    • A plaque for the recipient
    • Forum Registration fee for the recipient
