ISTA continues to invest in research to ensure its test procedures accurately reflect real-world distribution environments. Recent research initiatives funded and conducted across India identified a need for a test procedure that better represents the unique handling and climatic conditions found within the Indian parcel delivery system. As a result, ISTA has developed a new procedure: ISTA Project 3P: Packaged Products for India Parcel Delivery System Shipment, 70 kg (150 lb) or Less.
New ISTA Test Procedure
ISTA Project 3P: Packaged Products for India Parcel Delivery System Shipment, 70 kg (150 lb) or Less- Test Classification: ISTA 3 Series – General Simulation Test (Overview and Equipment Required)
Scope and Purpose
ISTA 3P is a general simulation test designed for packaged products weighing 70 kg (150 lb) or less shipped through the Indian parcel delivery network. The procedure reflects the combination of handling, transportation, and environmental conditions specific to India’s parcel distribution system.Key Characteristics
- Based on extensive field data collected throughout India
- Introduces new vibration, drop, and temperature/humidity profiles
- Characterizes shock, vibration, and climatic conditions unique to the Indian parcel environment
Technical Background
Field research revealed that the Indian parcel delivery system presents a distinctly different combination of handling and climatic hazards compared to other regions. These conditions include variations in handling intensity, transport infrastructure, and environmental exposure.As a result, ISTA 3P incorporates several new test elements that better represent this environment and, in multiple respects, reflect a more rigorous distribution profile than existing procedures.
Companies shipping product into India—or considering expansion into this market—are strongly encouraged to review and apply ISTA 3P. Packaging designs that perform adequately in other regions may not provide the same level of protection when subjected to the conditions of the Indian parcel delivery system.
