New Test Procedure: ISTA 3M
Eric Hiser, ISTA Vice President of Standards and Certifications
ISTA is pleased to announce the release of ISTA Test Project 3M: Packaged-Products for International Direct Import Shipment, a new addition to the ISTA 3 Series General Simulation Tests. (Overview and Equipment Required)
Scope and Purpose
ISTA Project 3M evaluates packaged products shipped from Asia-Pacific manufacturing locations to U.S. Distribution Centers (DCs) and retailer Fulfillment Centers (FCs). The test is designed to simulate hazards commonly encountered during the international inbound distribution cycle and help assess package performance throughout this critical supply chain segment.Key Characteristics
- Reflects hazards commonly encountered during international ocean freight shipments
- Addresses both floor-loaded and palletized shipment configurations
- Includes distribution events such as manual handling, clamp trucks, storage at elevated temperature & humidity, sea container handling, and truck & rail transport
- Can be paired with ISTA 3L to evaluate package performance over the full supply chain journey from manufacturing to the consumer's home
Technical Background
As global supply chains become increasingly complex, products often move through multiple handling and transportation stages before reaching retailer fulfillment networks. ISTA 3M was developed to provide a standardized method for evaluating package durability during the international inbound leg, helping organizations better understand packaging performance and improve product protection.Note: ISTA 3M is not intended to represent air freight shipping environments or specific events that may occur while an ocean vessel is underway between ports.
